Linda King Pruitt Programs and Information

   
Since beginning her storytelling career in 1993, Linda King Pruitt has performed and taught storytelling throughout Southern California. A member of the National Storytelling Network and South Coast Storytellers Guild, and board member for Los Angeles Story Works, she has told, taught, and lectured at: elementary schools, middle schools and high schools, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Fullerton, Saddleback College, USC Fisher Gallery, UCLA Armand Hammer Museum and Conference Center, Bowers Museum, Bowers Kidseum, La Habra Children’s Museum, has been featured on Mission Viejo T.V’s Storytime Theatre, performs with the Pacific Symphony Class Act Program, and has performed at the Los Angeles Storytelling Festival.


Linda has been an artist in residence since 1996 for the Fullerton School district program, All The Arts for All the Kids, and artist in residence for the Lawndale School District, providing professional development for their teachers. She loves sharing the oral tradition with audiences of all ages.

Bob Pruitt has enjoyed playing guitar since he was a teenager. Bob’s unique picking style was inspired by his love for the folk singing trio, Peter, Paul and Mary as well as other folk artists of the day. He also plays drums, flute, banjo, guitar, and multiple sound instruments. He enjoys bringing the story in songs alive and engaging audiences in musical play.

Tales and Tunes From Around the World - Bob and Linda use instruments, songs and stories from around the world to bring you interactive fun in this culturally rich program.

Fables & Folk Tunes - Aesop’s timeless fables come alive when Bob and Linda combine music, story and fun. Audience members help add musical background and become the animals in this delightful program.

Hey You! You’re too Small to be a Super Hero! Bob Pruitt and LInda King Pruitt use interactive song and story to tell world tales about small heroes, reminding us that courage comes in all sizes.

Goin’ For Gold - Interactive song and story take you back to the Gold Rush and Western Movement as Sweet Betsy from Pike Heads Out West. Native American tales, history, folk, and tall tales combine for an entertaining, educational program. Children are invited to participate with rhythm instruments, song and play.

Native American Tales and Legends - Linda is a registered member of the Choctaw Nation, but her stories come from all tribes and native people. Told with knowledge and respect, the stories of Coyote the Trickster, Grandmother Spider, animals, history, and nature, all come alive, with wonder and delight, to teach the wisdom of balance.

Stories of the Sky and Stars - Each people, each civilization, has always had their stories of the origin of the sky and stars. The stars remain constant to carry the message of the stories that Linda shares.

Nurturing Nature Tales: Helping to Make a Difference - This program, enhanced by Bob’s music, brings to you stories of plants and animals that speak of man’s relationship to the Earth, and reminds us of the fine balance we share with nature. An ideal program for Earth Day!

It’s Greek to Me! Linda brings the ancient Greek and Roman myths of Arachne, Midas, Mercury, Cupid and Psyche, Phaeton and more alive in this program, demonstrating how Greek literature continues to permeate our literature and language today.

Medieval Tales & Legends - Ballads and renaissance tunes add richness to the legend and lore from medieval and renaissance times.

Holiday Programs - February: Valentines Day Love Songs and Stories. March: St. Patrick’s Day Tunes and Tales of Luck. April: Earth Day - Nurturing Nature Tales. October/November: A Harvest of Tales and Tunes. December: Winter Tales and Tunes.

Assembly Programs

Goin’ For Gold - Interactive song and story take you back to the Gold Rush and Western Movement as Sweet Betsy from Pike Heads Out West. Bob and Linda arrive in authentic costumes along with guitar, washboard, Native American flute and drum and various rhythm instruments for audience participation. LInda, as Sweet Betsy from Pike, weaves a narrative researched from women’s diary entries from the westward movement throughout this program of Native American tales, history, folk, and tall tales that combine for an entertaining, educational program. Children are invited to participate with rhythm instruments, song and play.

Meets History-Social Science Content Standards (4.4 ) for grade four and Visual and Performing Arts Theatre Content Standards (5.1, 5.2).

Tales and Tunes From Around the World - Bob and Linda use instruments, songs, fairy tales, myths, folktales, legends and fables from around the world to bring you interactive fun in this culturally rich program that reminds us, as tales from different cultures are compared and contrasted, that we all really share the same stories.

Meets English-Language Arts Content Standards for grade three (3.2), and grade four (3.1, 3.2, 3.4) and Visual and Performing Arts Theatre Content Standards for kindergarten (2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1), grade one (2.0, 2.1, 5.2), grade two (2.1, 4.2,4.3), grade three (5.1, 5.2), grade four (2.1, 2.2), grade five (2.1,2.3), grade six (2.1, 2.2).

Workshops

Building a Family Tradition Through Storytelling -
30 minutes of interactive storytelling for pre-school to adult audience, followed by a 30 minute family workshop filled with more interactive storytelling and imagination games that enhance literary skills, help bring old family stories alive, and make new memories.

Storytelling Across the Curriculum -
Learn how you can utilize story as a creative teaching tool that enriches and supports curriculum standards. Sample lesson plans, exercises and stories are provided.

Creative Storytelling and Writing with Pourquoi Stories -
“Why is the sky so far away?” “Why is the ocean blue?” “Why does the turtle have cracks on his back?” Pourquoi is the French word for “why”, and the Pourquoi Tales are those stories that explain how things came to be. In this interactive workshop you will learn how to quickly create pourquoi stories using handpuppets as a prompt. A fun way to promote writing and performance skills for the classroom or storyteller. Sample lesson plan that supports curriculum standards is provided.

The Art of Storytelling -
Learn how to use your voice as a communication tool, from the heart to the head, as the power and diversity of storytelling is explored. Cultures throughout the world have always told stories as a way of passing down their beliefs, traditions and history. Whether you are an educator, parent, grandparent or storylover, The Art of Story can help you give voice to the stories you are waiting to tell.

You will learn:

  • Where to find stories - bibliography and internet bibliography provided.
  • Vocal techniques to bring your story alive.
  • Tips for defining the characters in your story.
  • How to use gestures and movements to help tell story.
  • How to cope with stagefright.
  • You will leave with a story to tell!
