Programs and Descriptions:

We Shall Overcome!

A musical theater, educational and historical journey through African and African American music. In this animated and interactive show, Makinto explains the history of black people in America through the evolution of black music. Makinto uses costume changes and live musical examples (from blues to jazz) played on a variety of musical instruments to illustrate the challenges and changes that occurred in the battle of African Americans for their right to equality. From African roots over slave times, emancipation, awakening, civil rights movement to modern times, show is ideal for every school, library or institution desiring to provide a well researched, easy to understand overview over the history of African- American people.

Adelante! Let’s Go!

This is a musical theatre program about Hispanic heritage in America.  Follow Carlos, a modern Latino boy living in LA, as he tells the story of his ancestors migrating from the Caribbean over Mexico to California. Using guitar, flute, percussion and keyboard, Makinto leads us on this journey through Latin music.  Everyone will enjoy and participate with well know songs like La Bamba, Oye Como Va, Macarena and others.  You will meet famous Latino artists and historical figures like Tito Puente, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Caesar Chavez, Ricky Martin and others.  Enjoy stories of important dates like Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day.  This program can be bilingual.

O Yes I Can Say No to Drugs!

Makinto provides a powerful and entertaining musical show with student skits about saying no to drugs and yes to life, moral standards and community.  This is a necessary program for our children who are more and more vulnerable to substance abuse.  It is entertaining and informative as it teaches children to say no to drugs and to recognize the importance of living within a positive community.

TeRRiFiCC - The Six Pillars of Character

Every family, every school, every community wants TeRRiFiCC! kids. Makinto provides a musical theatre program to help children understand the six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.

In this engaging, high-energy musical show, the cool and clever Mr. TeRRiFiCC, with the audience’s help, confronts and transforms a traveler from a lawless and amoral society. Each of the six pillars is presented in musical form and a TERRIFICC! theme song ties it all together. Every scene is punctuated by an inspiring, compelling, and rocking original song by Makinto. TERRIFICC! never fails to transmit emotion, excitement and the urge to actively join in with singing, clapping and foot stomping. Musical genres used include rock-and-roll, rhythm and blues, hip-hop rap, flute improvisation, and African rhythms for a varied and diverse musical presentation.

Testimonials:

We just had what our principal, many of the faculty and kids called "the best assembly ever!" When we asked for questions at the end of the grade 3-5 assembly, the room was filled with hands of enthusiastic kids wanting to know more. The 50-minute show delighted kids grades K-5 and had the teachers and parents ready to dance! Dr. Pat Vincent "We Shall Overcome" is an animated and interactive one-man show that presents the history of black people in America through the evolution of African American music. While perfect for Black History Month, (February), it would be excellent ANY time of year. The featured performer, George Makinto (he goes by "Makinto"), is a professional musician, PV resident, and a Vista Grande dad. There's a very large photo of him on the front page of the PVP News today (Saturday, Feb 12). Cindy Akiyama , Vista Grande PTA 3rd VP Education
