Susana Elena honors the rich variety and sophistication inherent in Spanish dance by showcasing gypsy flamenco dances (Judeo/Moorish/East Indian mix), classical Spanish and folkloric dances, and Spanish dances indelibly stamped with foreign influences (from Cuba, South America, and Africa). Her choreographies are theatrical, tell a story, and are thus easy to follow. Most of the choreographies employ the use of engaging props as well such as castanets, a Spanish fan, a Cord obese hat, and a bullfighter’s cape for added interest.
Susana Elena’s show encourages various forms of audience participation. These include the teaching of Palmas (hand claps to rhythm), Jaleos (words of encouragement such as Ole’, etc.), and how flamenco arm and hand movements are done. At the show’s end children are invited onstage to learn simple rumba flamenco with scarves. Susana brings extra props for the children to try out as well.
Susana Elena continues to perform throughout the Los Angeles area. Besides taking pilates and ballet classes regularly in Los Angeles, she also continues to study Spanish dance in New York, Sevilla, and Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. |
